A 5-night fall foliage road trip from Atlanta through the North Georgia and Western North Carolina mountains, with stops in Clayton, Cashiers, Sylva, Lake Lure and Banner Elk

The Ridgeline Trail is a fall foliage road trip starting two hours north of Atlanta in Clayton, Georgia, and climbs north through the Blue Ridge Mountains to Banner Elk, North Carolina. Along the way you’ll golf, hike one of the South’s deepest gorges, fly fish the Nantahala, go brewery hopping in Sylva, take in the view from Chimney Rock, and cross the Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain. Spend each night at a Ridgeline Hotel, boutique inns across the Georgia and North Carolina mountains.

The best time to go is early October through early November. Leaves turn first at the highest elevations (Banner Elk, Grandfather Mountain, the Parkway’s high overlooks) and work their way down to the valleys (Clayton, Lake Lure) by late October.

Stop 1: Clayton, Georgia

Drive from Atlanta: about 2 hours north

Clayton is the gateway to the North Georgia mountains, and it’s the perfect first stop to shake off the city.

Hike Tallulah Gorge which is home to a nearly 1,000-foot-deep canyon carved by the Tallulah River. Walk the rim trails to overlook views of waterfalls and fall color, or take on the stairs down to the suspension bridge that sways above the gorge floor. Fall is one of the best times to visit, when the hardwoods lining the canyon walls turn gold and red. After your adventure, grab lunch at Tap Yard across the street from the Tallulah gorge. As local restaurant owner Bill Turk stated “it’s a relaxed spot to refuel, grab a cold drink, and plan the rest of your afternoon.”

Prefer your fall color from the fairway? Golf at Sky Valley, Georgia’s highest city, sits just north of Clayton and offers a mountain golf course surrounded by ridgelines. Crisp fall mornings and changing leaves make it one of the most scenic rounds in the state.

End your first day grabbing dinner at the Vandiver, the on-site restaurant at Bridge Creek Inn. Grab a seat on the patio, order something local, and enjoy the cool mountain air. Pro tip: Start your trip on a Thursday. Every Thursday in the fall, the Vandiver hosts live music starting at 5pm, which is the perfect way to kick off your Ridgeline Trail adventure. Bridge Creek Inn puts you in the heart of Clayton, steps from dinner and minutes from the gorge, golf and downtown shopping.

Stop 2: Cashiers, North Carolina

Drive an hour from Clayton to cross into North Carolina and arrive in the Cashiers Valley, a plateau surrounded by waterfalls, cold mountain streams and some of the most dramatic fall color in the Southern Appalachians. Cashiers sits in some of the best trout water in the Southeast, and fall is prime season with cool water, active fish and foliage reflecting off the streams. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned angler, stop by Brookings Anglers in Cashiers to get sorted with the right equipment, local advice and guided trip options. Pro tip: Ask for Dale to get advice on the best spots to fly fish around Cashiers.

After a day on the water, grab some lunch or dinner at Whiteside Brewing. Whiteside Brewing Company is a laid back local brewery that’s perfect after a morning on the water. Or just 10 miles down the road, Highlands is worth the drive for lunch alone. Our new favorite spot is Town Hall Highlands. Make an afternoon of it and browse Main Street’s galleries and shops. The Wells Hotel Cashiers is your cozy basecamp for the Cashiers-Highlands plateau, close to the trout streams, trailheads and restaurants that make this corner of the mountains special.

Stop 3: Sylva, North Carolina

Drive from Cashiers about 35 minutes down the mountain to Sylva, North Carolina. Sylva is a walkable small mountain town with a big personality and an even bigger craft beer scene.

Sylva’s historic Jackson County Courthouse sits on a hill overlooking Main Street, and it’s one of the most photographed buildings in Western North Carolina. Climb the steps to the top for a
view of downtown framed by fall-colored mountains.

Go brewery hopping. Sylva’s breweries sit within walking distance of each other on and around Main Street, including Balsam Falls Brewing Co, Lazy Hiker, or Innovation Brewing. Sylva’s downtown Social District lets you carry an approved drink between participating businesses within the district’s boundaries, so you can stroll Main Street, shop and take in the fall color with a local beer in hand.

Save dinner for Ilda, one of the most celebrated restaurants in the North Carolina mountains. Run by the husband-and-wife team of Michelin-trained Chef Santiago Guzzetti and Sommelier Crystal Pace, Ilda was named Eater Carolinas’ ‘Mountain Restaurant of the Year’ and combines traditional Italian recipes with locally sourced Appalachian ingredients. Reservations are recommended. discoverjacksonnc

Stay the night at Hotel Sylva. Hotel Sylva puts you right downtown, so you can walk to dinner, walk to the breweries, and walk back.

Stop 4: The Blue Ridge Parkway and Lake Lure

Then wake up and drive about 2.5 to 3 hours with Parkway stops. Hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Balsam Gap. This morning you get your first taste of “America’s Favorite Drive.” Pick up the Parkway just outside Sylva at Balsam Gap and head north. This high-elevation stretch climbs above 5,000 feet, where fall color often peaks earliest, and the overlooks deliver layer after layer of ridgelines in red, orange and gold. Take your time. The Parkway speed limit is 45 mph, and the overlooks are the point.

Exit the Parkway near Asheville and wind down to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park. You can hike the stairs of the Outcroppings Trail to the top of the 315-foot granite spire, or take the elevator carved into the mountain. Either way, the reward is a sweeping view over Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure framed in fall color. Or for a different perspective, rent a pontoon from Lake Lure Tours and see the fall color reflecting off the lake with the mountains rising above you.

Afterwards, unwind at the historic Lake Lure Inn & Spa after a full day of mountain views.

Stop 5: Banner Elk, North Carolina

After a good night’s rest, get back on the Parkway and head north. The final leg takes you into North Carolina’s High Country. Note for fall 2026: the largest concentration of Hurricane Helene-related roadway damage occurred from the Linville Falls area near milepost 317 south to Mount Mitchell State Park near milepost 355, and that section is expected to reopen by the end of 2026. The easiest route is US-221 north through Marion to Linville Falls, then back onto the Parkway. The roadway is open from Highway 421 in Deep Gap to Highway 221 at the Linville Falls community (Milepost 276.5 to Milepost 317.5), with access open as usual to Grandfather Mountain. Always check the National Park Service’s road status page before you go. WLOSBlowing Rock

Once you’re closer north, visit the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain. Drive the 2-mile road up Grandfather Mountain to the Mile High Swinging Bridge, America’s highest suspension footbridge. Standing at a mile of elevation, you’ll look out over a sea of fall color stretching in every direction. Bring a jacket, since it’s often windy and much cooler at the top.

Nearby on Beech Mountain, the Land of Oz reopens for Autumn at Oz, a walk-through festival along the original Yellow Brick Road. It’s one of the world’s largest Oz celebrations, held on three weekends in September. Tickets sell out, so book early. wataugademocrat

End your Ridgeline Trail at The Lodge at Banner Elk, your cozy home base for the High Country’s best fall views.
